Episode 73 The new Guy

The new Guys

The dorm room smelled of stale air and the faint, metallic hum of the gaming console. For an hour, the only sounds were the frantic, rhythmic clicking of buttons and the electronic chirping of the TV. Ted and Marco sat shoulder-to-shoulder, eyes locked on the screen in a silent, desperate competition. They sat there for about an hour, completely immersed in the game. Eventually, the play came to an end, and Ted put the controller down.

Ted stood up, his joints popping, and headed for the mini-fridge in the corner. He reached past the half-empty cartons to pull out a cold Dr. Pepper for himself and a root beer for Marco. He handed the can over, and for a second, the room went quiet. Some would say it was silly, but for Ted, he knew from his friends and from mixed experiences that drinking was just no good and often cost friendships, marriages, and families.

They toasted their cans together, and Marco took a seat on the fluffy sofa facing the bunk beds. Marco was the first to say it. "So Ted, you honestly want to get together back with Shelly? You know that. Yeah, maybe her family should have changed. Maybe your feelings just changed. You really want to do this?"

Ted responded, "Yes, my feelings haven't changed despite Allyson. My first love was always Shelly, and I want her back. She's all I could think about until I came back and now she's back. Yeah, my chance to get back together with her, and if I can show her that I'm sorry for breaking up, and that it was all just a mistake. I know her feelings are hurt, but I think we can go over this."

Marco eventually headed out for his run, leaving to cover his usual three miles. Ted got onto his knees and reached underneath the bottom bunk. He pulled out the hidden pictures of Shelly, staring at them for a long time before finally getting up and heading to the shower room. The facility was small—two toilets and one shower for every five dorms—but being guys, they didn't really need much. He took his shower, felt relaxed, changed into comfortable clothes, and kicked back in his bed until he fell asleep.

The next morning, Shelly got up early. She showered, dried her hair and put it up, and applied some light makeup before slipping on her jeans and Conference Center shirt. She went down to the fridge and got herself a bowl of Puffy Wheat cereal. As she ate, another girl came down, a new person we haven't spoken of before.

The girl looked at her and said, "Hey, newbie."

Shelly responded, "Technically, it's my second time working here, but it's okay, you didn't know." They laughed together, sharing a bit of early morning silliness.

"I work at accommodations, you know, housekeeping," the girl said.

"That’s where I work too," Shelly replied. "Do you work this morning?"

"Yes," the girl said. "I'm doing towel changes and cleaning up all the restrooms."

"Me too," Shelly said. "I forgot to ask your name, I'll try to remember. What's your name?"

"I'm Maren," the girl answered.

"There's only me, you, and I think a guy," Maren continued. "I don't know his name, it's just his first day. If you have any advice for him, it'd be helpful if you help him out."

Shelly finished her breakfast, put her shoes and name badge on, and headed to the supply office. Cassandra, the accommodation manager who was about thirty-seven, was already there going over notes and writing down assignments. She looked up as Shelly walked in.

"Oh, Shelly, you're here on time," Cassandra said. "You know, last time we were together, I was always getting onto you for being late. It's cool that you're on time. Well, since we don't have any guests this week, we're going to do basics. Towel changes for current guests, cleaning of all the restrooms—men's and women's—and the showers. And then we're going to do some deep cleaning since we have the time."

Shelly held up her hands playfully. "Okay, I'll behave."

Cassandra smiled just as Maren arrived. "Have you guys met?" Cassandra asked.

"Oh yes, we've met," Maren said. "But where's our third person?"

Right then, he arrived. He was five feet tall and very muscular, an amateur bodybuilder, but completely friendly and outgoing. He took a seat and immediately started cracking friendly jokes with everyone at the table.

"Okay, okay ladies," he said. "I think we're going to do good stuff."

Maren joked, "Well, after another cup of coffee."

The new guy, Gage, was so positive and energetic he just wanted to get to the work. Shelly asked him, "Do you have any housekeeping experience?"

"Yes," Gage said. "I worked for a conference center in Washington state doing the exact same thing."

Cassandra gave them their assignments. "You three get busy. Maren, you start with the towel changes. Shelly and Gage, Shelly will show you her set of keys and where any keys you need will be found. She'll show you all the linen closets in all the buildings, all the supply rooms, and everywhere you need to be for the showers and the rooms that are currently occupied. She'll show you the sheet that says who is currently in what building and what rooms."

Shelly was just staring at him. Cassandra had to repeat herself. "Shelly? You okay with that?"

Shelly stumbled and stuttered. "Oh, yes! That's... I was just thinking about the cookies I wanted to bake when I get off." She fumbled with her fingers and blushed a little bit before leading Gage out to show him the ropes.

Gage proved to be very personable. He wasn't just interested in fitness; he was extremely knowledgeable and bubbly on any topic. When the subject of books came up, Shelly was delighted. As they worked side-by-side doing towel changes, she found herself wanting to get to know this mysterious man better.

"You know," Gage said while they were loading the cart, "I just finished *The Grapes of Wrath* last night."

Shelly piped up, "Oh, for your first time?"

Gage cut her off with a smile. "No, no, I've read it think three times in my life. I just wanted to think about the implications in the book. It’s such a well-written book."

Shelly was taken aback. She thought to herself: *He’s good looking, he’s friendly, he’s kind, and he loves books.* She felt herself becoming captivated, totally forgetting about Ted for the moment. They worked together replacing towels, cleaning restrooms, and deep cleaning the recreational areas.

When noon arrived, it was time for lunch. Since there weren't many people around, the staff could get their meals from the cooks and eat on the side of the dining room not being used by guests, or go outside. Maren got her plate and headed out.

Gage said to Shelly, "There are some cozy benches on the other side. It’s really lovely."

Shelly got her styrofoam container of food and a chocolate milk, and Gage followed her out. From the patio, you could see anyone taking advantage of the park-like benches. Shelly and Gage sat down, laughing and joking, having a wonderful time.

Meanwhile, inside, Ted was with Marco. They were two of the people serving the fifty guests who were there. It was a busy shift, and Ted was focused on making sure everyone had a wonderful experience. Then, he heard a joyful cackle from outside.

He knew that laugh. It was Shelly. He felt a surge of excitement and went over to the window to say hi.

When he looked out, he saw the muscular man. Shelly was laughing with him, joking and having the best time Ted had seen her have recently. She was lightly placing her hand on his arm and laughing so hard they were both about to choke on their food.

Ted felt a wave of nervousness. He really wanted to get back together with Shelly, but now he saw he had to compete against this new guy. He wanted to continue watching them to see what happened, but he had his duties to attend to.

Life at Cannon Beach

For two and a half years of my life—from the time I was twenty-one until I was almost twenty-four—I lived and worked in Cannon Beach, Oregon. It was a great life because I absolutely love the ocean.

I truly enjoyed the crashing waves, the sound of the annoying seagulls, the walks on the beach, and just exploring everything about it. Whenever I was down or crying, the sound of the waves at night always brought comfort.

There were bonfires, sing-alongs, and walks by myself or with fellow employees and friends. I have so many stories from that time, and it will always go down in my heart as one of the best eras of my life. If I could go there right now, I would. It honestly pains me to be stuck so far away from it now.
I first fell in love with Cannon Beach when I saw *The Goonies* way back in 1985. I had never actually seen the ocean in person until I was eighteen, on a trip to Cannon Beach

with my father and mother. How awestruck I was when I first saw the beach firsthand is a story for a different time, but there were so many different seasons to experience there.
Summer was the most unusual season of all. I saw things I never thought I'd see routinely, like people sunbathing topless, whether they had a good figure or a bad one.

Then, one evening just after sunset, when the sun had gone down but there was still enough light to see, I was walking along a pretty remote section of the beach. In the distance, I saw two women set something down and start running toward the ocean. That sort of thing was pretty common, but as I got closer, I noticed something else. Even though the light was fading, I could see them clearly. They held hands as they dashed into the water to take a plunge—which is incredibly cold, even in the summertime.

As I got nearer, I realized they had stripped down entirely. Naked in the surf, they held each other and started giving each other lots of kisses. At that point, I didn't want to intrude on whatever came next. I turned right around and walked the other way to give those two lovers their privacy to enjoy their naked, kissing game in the ocean. I just headed back to my dorm room, and that was that. It's just one of those unique things you witness when you're living in Cannon Beach.

The Rock of the mountains

Have you heard the native legend of the rock monsters in the passes of Washington state?

The natives never went to the northern pass over the mountain after the first snowfall. The legend of the rock monsters kept them away.

One day long ago, two young braves from the tribe wanted tales of their bravery.

So they would go up to the passes at first snow. Then stay there a couple of days

Then return saying that they fought  the monster and lived. That was the plan. So the took off for the passes.

It took three days then they were moving up the pass. They eventually found a place to camp out for a few days.

They built a big fire. They had brought food 😋  So they had a plan. Hang out for a day or 2 cut each other, inform bruises on eac other.

Then they could come back, tell the story over there. They bravely fought the rock monsters. And they would be celebrated as heroes of the tribe. Because they didn't believe there was really rock monsters.

🪨  everything when according to plan the first day. They hung out by the 🔥 fire.  The next day they were deciding what to say.  They thought this would make them legends. In their own tribe.

Then they saw it movement, add the stream. They looked on and ah, as a creature.

Walk towards them. It didn't move like a rock monster

Is a 10 feet tall face was Gray.

And it appeared to have agree armor code in its body.   Before any of them could react

It got two of them and a couple of strides. One was thrown across the river, but to the side.

The other indian what's captured. And was killed, right in front of the other indian. The monster through the indian towards the tree line. Then the monster Walk away.  He went to his friends lifeless body and cried.

Encounter in the Tunnel

I will tell you the story of the last time I went into the haunted tunnel. Weird stuff had occurred in the tunnel before; those are stories for another time.

The last time, though, in the haunted tunnel… We were mostly sober. Three of us were going through the tunnel. It started as a usual trip.

So it was normal through the mile-long tunnel. It's dark and spooky. A chill ran through me. I was down in the tunnel just talking about old times. Normally, you can see light from each side of the tunnel.

Suddenly, the light from both sides of the tunnel disappeared. Suddenly, a voice said, "Run." Then a growl. I told them to run! So I ran out as fast as I could, with my friends behind me. When we got out, they were pale. I asked, "Why are you so quiet?" They said something pushed them out of the way, and something cold passed through one's body. It was trying to get me.I will tell you the story of the last time I went into the haunted tunnel. Weird stuff had occurred in the tunnel before; those are stories for another time.

The canal

Let me tell you about the setting in Yakima Valley. There are canals, big canals and little canals. The big canals, two of which run through the lower valley, are for watering the crops. The little canals run through the city. I enjoy watching you water your gardens, etc. The big canals are upwards of fifteen to twenty feet across and eight to twelve feet deep, with swiftly moving water at five miles an hour. If you are thrown into a canal, there is little hope of getting out alive.

So it's a wise choice not to put yourself in that situation. One of the things we did do. Where's in the fall? The cow will dry up.
So we'd walk along the canal for miles, just searching what we could find. Weirdford, fine stereos.
V c r's tape decks. The people we'll throw in the canal. It'd be like a treasure hunt. In some air, the cow, the water sat in there long enough and that when an early freeze happened in the fall, it froze over for the lengths of half a football field and we go and ice skate with their shoes and try to bust it up. Generally have fun as kids. Yes, this went wrong. Sometimes there's many a story of it going wrong. It may not have a lot of water. But it's freezing water that can be upwards of six feet deep, spanning a football field. Did I almost lose my life? Yes, was I thankful be alive? Yes was I cold yes. Did my friend laugh at me? Yes.
Did my friend save me? Yes, and then start laughing me? Yes, he did. Did I get him back later? Yes,  well, that's all for this post. I will do another pose why expand on the danger. A walk in the canal There's more dangerous, trust me. What else you do being  a Gen X  kid.

My Enconter with Bigfoot

I was a camp counselor in the Chinook Pass woods. It was a life-changing experience; the events changed my views forever.

So I volunteered at the camp deep in the wods. One night, with the kids asleep, I left the cabin to experience the woods. It was midnight when I started walking out of camp. This was frowned upon because of the bears.

I walked half a mile outside the camp. It began to get creepy. I had been listening to the sounds of the forest. Very calming. Then, suddenly, all went silent. It was alarming, as if the whole forest knew something I did not.

What were my thoughts? First was curiosity. Was this a usual thing? Then fear started to work its way into my mind. My thoughts turned to black bear or brown bear.

So I chose to head back. "I'm not afraid," I told myself. I gave a fake yawn, trying to convince myself I was not afraid. It was not working. Then a rock, the size of my fist, was thrown at me from the edge of the forest.

I thought, "Can a bear throw a rock?" Then i reviewed my facts on bears in my mind. No they can't do it.  My thoughts were then maybe somebody pranking me. That couldn't be cause it was midnight. No one was out there and everybody was asleep in their cabins. No one was out.

Then my o shit moment.  If not a bear if not a human Big foot?  My mind wrestled with the implications of what I was thinking. Did I run do o walk? So I choose to walk quickly.  Then I heard large beast following me inside the brush line in the dark. Whith ease moving back and forth.

Then i heard tree knocking i saw in a documentary it's was how big foot  communicate with each other.   Now there's were knocking in trees in front of me and behind  me. Rock were being thrown at me 20 pound rocks shown with ease.

So had nothing to lose i ran as fast as I could. Something was in the forest running just out of sight.  It's was breaking trees as it pressed me. The cracking of the branches.   Though a shivers through my sole. It was just toying with me.I still was detrimed to make it to my cabin. I never ran so hard. Then I saw the cabin 50 feet in front of me, I was no fair. So happy 2 get to safety.  I got in my bunk. I did not sleep. I told no one. Who is believe me? I was chased in the middle of the night by sasquatches!

I the next morning went back the rocks there there in tree line some thing had moved quickly though the hevey brush of the forest. I saw a large print but it was not  clear enough. We'll goodnight my readers.

The tunnel day 4

So I moved to a small town in middle school. I had always lived way outside of town. This time, for the first time ever, I was in town. 🌳🏡 So I made a new friend. Let's call him Zach. He invited me to his friend group. He told me to sneak out at midnight, so I did. I didn't know what to expect. I snuck out and met up by his house. 🏡 There were five of us. They said they liked to explore things in town at night. 🌙

So we explored and went into the tunnel. The opening was big at first, then it quickly got smaller. Soon, you had to bend down while walking through it. The wind preceded us through the tunnel. It was exhilarating! I definitely found my new friend group. The tunnel was perfectly straight.
So it appeared that you could 🏃‍♂️  and seem like you  were not making progress.  It was the perfect illusion.  The air was damp in the fall there tunnel was dry.  Now there's water 💧 2 inches deep in it. We slowly went through the tunnel. If this was the type of adventure  that my new friends were into  it it was going to be fun 😁
So we got through the mile long tunnel. . We got to the end of the tunnel  and climbed up and  out.   This was only backstory to the story of the Haunted tunnel.. Stay tuned for part 2.    🙃

No sabía qué esperar.

Story TIME: Doppelgänger.

This could be the most unusual story. Have you ever had people say they saw you in a place where you were not? This has happened to me on several occasions. It started in Cannon Beach. I was working, waiting tables at Conference World. Everything was normal. I got through my shift; we got everything cleaned up. It was about 9:15 PM. I was exhausted, so I laid down on my bed, still in my uniform—black slacks with a white button-down shirt. I was so tired. I had spent all my free time at bonfires and walking down the beach with friends. I chose this night to crash early. My roommate came in about 11 PM. I woke up when he came in. He said, "You're really rude this evening." I replied, "What are you talking about? I came straight from work." He said, "I saw you in my room and then fell asleep." He had a different story. After my work, he saw me walk to the bonfire and stand next to it, with a blank stare, just standing there, not speaking. He said he asked how I was doing. I said fine, evidently. Then that person walked out of sight down the beach. Same clothes and same everything. I told him it was not me. I didn't have sand in my shoes. I couldn't convince him it wasnnot me.  This happened many times well living there. People would claim saw me though out Cannon Beach.   Shop keepers would say  back again?  Evidently, I go in a store, look around great them. Look in some items, then how go away. Then a couple hours, I myself would go into the store and be looking around and they I decided to buy something guess I was back again. It was very disturbing.  There was no video security footage. I never saw him the other me.  There is no answer.  Did have to  do with the Haunted tunnel of my youth?

Cannon Beach Oregon Spooky story

I lived and worked in my early twenties. It was widely known as something you don't do. It was my first time living at the beach. My first fall there was beautiful; we would have bonfires, sit, and talk. It was so peaceful. Sometimes I felt like it was all an amazing dream. If you ever walk on the beach at night, you feel the wind. All you can hear is the wind and the crashing waves. Walking on the beach, the sand under my toes, I hoped it would last forever. You know, everything has its time. I was on the beach at night where the wet sand met the dry sand. I had heard the bonfire stories. The story is that when you are on the beach with no city lights, it will appear. You will hear whispers at first. Then you will hear someone call your name. I thought it was all bull. One night I was walking down the beach, far from the glow of the city lights. With only the moonlight, I was making my way. When I heard my name called, quietly at first, my thoughts were "Oh, shit." You know, you're turning around hoping it's the wind. So I turned around reluctantly. I saw the shadow figure smile and absorb itself straight into the sand. I was in shock!   I actually saw shadow thing. Then I chose  to get back to town as soon as possible.  There are things we don't understand. I will always wonder why me?
