Translating American English

​American Phrase: "Watch out, the sidewalk is totally messed up ahead."

​British Translation: "Do mind your footing, darling; the pavement is looking a bit pear-shaped up ahead."

​2. The Total Meltdown

​American Phrase: "He completely lost his mind and threw a massive temper tantrum."

​British Translation: "He’s gone absolutely spare and thrown a right wobbler, hasn't he?"

​3. The Exhausted Hype

​American Phrase: "I am so incredibly tired, but that party last night was absolutely wild."

​British Translation: "I’m completely knackered, truth be told, but the bash last night was brilliant—absolute limbs."

​4. The Style Check

​American Phrase: "Your sneakers and pants look really cool today."

​British Translation: "Your trainers and trousers are looking rather smart today, mate."

​5. The Food Coma

​American Phrase: "I ate way too much fast food and now I feel completely gross."

​British Translation: "I’ve gone entirely over the top on the takeaway, and now I feel properly rubbish."

​British Translation: "She’s completely given me the elbow and left me on read, the cheeky mare."
